Course Information


Course Description:

This course is intended for process managers and process engineers of small and medium Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) organizations in the aviation maintenance industry (including component and engine workshops).


In this course we will explain the LEAN phylosophy and work towards practicing LEAN principles on your own MRO processes. 


Course Objectives:

After completion of this course, you will be able to assess your own processes and by means of LEAN principles optimize the throughput and output of these processes. This course will provide you with the competences that guarantees process improvements in your organization. 



Learning objectives:

After completion of this course, the student will:

  • understand how to eliminate inefficiency
  • learn to create flow and respond quickly to customers
  • apply LEAN principles plus theory on their own company processes



Regulatory requirement compliance:

There are no regulatory requirments this course needs to comply with. Throughout the course and the workshop, we will closely monitor if the imposed process changes do not violate EASA and FAA maintenance regulations.




This course targets managers, engineers, LEAN change agents, and others involved in implementing LEAN concepts in small and medium MRO organizations. Participents need to understand and have a clear view of their company processes.

Module 3: Practicing LEAN principles

Module 4: Applying LEAN in the MRO ector

Module 5: Practicing LEAN principles in the MRO sector

Module 6: Optimizing MRO processes

Module 7: Workshop - Get started with process optimization at your organization



Course Duration:

The course programme shall consist of two days and starts at 9.00 till 16.00. Additional breaks may be taken as needed. The course programme will be as follows: 


DAY 1:

09.00 – 10.30 Start Module 1 

10.30 – 10.45 Coffee Break

10.45 – 12.00 Start Module 2

12.00 – 12.45 Lunch Break (30 to 45 minutes depending on the local needs)

12.45 – 14.30 Start module 3

14.30 – 14.45 Coffee Break

14.45 – 16.00 Start Module 4


DAY 2:

09.00 – 10.30 Start Module 5

10.30 – 10.45 Coffee Break

10.45 – 12.00 Start Module 6

12.00 – 12.45 Lunch Break (30 to 45 minutes depending on the local needs)

12.45 – 14.30 Start Workshop

14.30 – 14.45 Coffee Break

14.45 – 16.00 Continue Workshop

None, the student will receive the course documentation (on USD drive or DVD) at the course.

Hardware/Software requirements and Browser information


Hardware requirements:

We recommend to bring a laptop or tablet with WiFi connection. During the course, we will visit the EASA website regularly and at the end of the course you will perform an online examination.


Software requirements:

No additional software requirements are applicable.


Browser information:

A reliable computer or tablet with Wifi internet connection and internet browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Firefox) are required.




Instructor information


Instructor credentials:

For this course we use multiple instructors. All have a solid background in Aviation (Maintenance) Process Improvement programs. All instructors involved have each over 10 years of relevant experience and are recognized as “Subject Matter Expert”. They will be able to draw upon their wealth of experience to explain details on ineffciency and unnecessary process step eliminations, via actual case studies related to actual process improvement projects.

Assessment and Grading


Testing procedure:

Students will perform an online examination with Multiple-choice questions. A laptop or tabled is with WiFi internet connection is needed to complete this examination. 


Grading procedure:

This examination needs to be passed with a minimum pass rate of 75% in order to receive a certificate of course completion. 




Assignments and Participation


Assignments and Projects:

Optional: Collect data of one or more processes for improvement within your own company.


Class Participation:

Students must participate in all interactive aspects of the course. Students are expected to communicate with instructor as a learning resource and actively participate in discussions.




Course Ground Rules


Participation is required, expected to communicate with other students in team projects, learn how to navigate in the learning environment system, keep abreast of course announcements, use the student e-mail address opposed to a personal e-mail address. Address technical problems immediately and observe course netiquette at all times. 


Communication guidelines



  • Always include a subject line.
  • Select your wordings in the e-mail carefully. Use of emoticons can help to include the correct emotion in the message.
  • Use standard fonts
  • Do not send large attachments
  • Special formatting such as centring, audio messaging, tables, html, etc. should be avoided as much as possible.
  • Respect the privacy of other students or class members


Discussion Groups:

  • Review the discussion threads thoroughly before entering the discussion.
  • Try to maintain threads by using the reply button, instead of starting a new topic
  • Do not make insulting or inflammatory statements to other members of the discussion group. Be respectful of other's ideas
  • Be patient and read the comments of other group members thoroughly before entering your remarks
  • Be cooperative with group leaders in completing assigned tasks
  • Be positive and constructive in group discussions
  • Respond in timely manner



  • Introduce yourself in the chat session
  • Be polite. Choose words carefully. Do not use derogatory statements.
  • Be concise in responding in the chat session
  • Be prepared to open the chat session at the schedules time
